Trump's Ukraine U-Turn: More US Weapons Heading to Kyiv Amid Escalating Russian Attacks
In a dramatic shift, US President Donald Trump has pledged to send more defensive weapons to Ukraine, reversing a recent pause in critical arms deliveries. This decision comes as Ukraine faces increasingly severe Russian aerial assaults, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced air defence capabilities, particularly Patriot missile systems.
Just days after a controversial halt in critical arms deliveries, US President Donald Trump has made a significant U-turn on his stance towards Ukraine, announcing that the United States will send more weapons, primarily defensive ones, to Kyiv. This reversal underscores the escalating urgency of the situation as Ukraine grapples with relentless Russian offensives.
Speaking at the beginning of a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump stated, "We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves. They’re getting hit very hard now. We’re going to send some more weapons - defensive weapons primarily." This declaration marks a clear departure from the recent pause, which had sent ripples of concern through Kyiv and its allies.
The US Defense Department swiftly confirmed the President's directive, announcing that additional defensive weapons would be sent to Ukraine to aid in their protection while efforts towards a lasting peace continue. The Pentagon also reiterated that its global assessment of military shipments remained ongoing.
While President Trump had previously mentioned Ukraine's need for Patriot missiles on Friday, he did not specifically refer to them again in his Monday remarks. However, the pressing need for these advanced air defence systems is undeniable for Ukraine, which views them as crucial for shielding its cities from the growing barrage of Russian aerial attacks.
The initial halt in arms shipments was part of a "standard review of all weapons and all aid" the US provides globally, as explained by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt. She clarified that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had directed this worldwide assessment to ensure all aid aligned with "America’s interests."
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following a phone conversation with President Trump on Friday, confirmed their agreement to bolster Kyiv’s ability to "defend the sky" against the intensified Russian assaults. The two leaders also discussed collaborative defence manufacturing, acquisitions, and financial commitments, with Ukraine persistently advocating for more Patriot missile systems.
Echoing Ukraine's urgent appeal, Germany has also confirmed it is in discussions about acquiring Patriot air defence systems for Ukraine to help bridge the current shortfall.
The renewed focus on air defence comes amidst a significant escalation in Russian aerial attacks. Authorities reported that Russia launched over 100 drones at civilian targets in Ukraine overnight. President Zelenskyy revealed on Monday that over the past week alone, Russia had unleashed approximately 1,270 drones, 39 missiles, and nearly 1,000 heavy glide bombs across Ukraine, highlighting the sheer scale of the threat facing the nation.
This renewed commitment from the US, particularly in defensive weaponry, is a critical development for Ukraine as it strives to protect its citizens and infrastructure from the ongoing conflict.(source-Mint)
