Trump Takes a Stand: US to Send Patriot Missiles to Ukraine Amid Putin Disappointment

In a significant shift, US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will send Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine. This decision comes as Trump expresses growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions and continued aggression in Ukraine. New sanctions and a potentially "aggressive" military aid package are also on the horizon.

President Trump Changes Course: Ukraine to Receive Patriot Air Defence

In a surprising turn of events, US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Washington will be sending much-needed Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine. This move signals a clear shift in his stance, as he voiced increasing dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin's handling of the ongoing conflict.

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews, Trump stated, "We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need." While the exact number of systems is yet to be confirmed, the President made it clear that Ukraine would receive "various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment" to bolster their defences against relentless Russian missile and drone attacks. However, he also emphasised that Ukraine would "pay us 100% for that."

Growing Disappointment with Putin

Trump's decision comes amid mounting Russian aggression and a dwindling patience with Vladimir Putin. The US President expressed his "very disappointment" with the Russian leader, highlighting a perceived disconnect between Putin's words of peace and his continued military actions. "I thought he was somebody that meant what he said - and he'll talk so beautifully, then he'll bomb people at night. I don't like it," Trump remarked.

This growing disenchantment seems to have been a key factor in Trump's policy shift, particularly after a phone call with Putin on July 3rd, where the Russian President reportedly indicated plans to escalate the conflict further.

Aggressive Military Aid and Tougher Sanctions Ahead?

Beyond the Patriot systems, reports from Axios suggest that Trump is poised to unveil an "aggressive" new military aid package for Ukraine. This could potentially include long-range offensive weapons capable of striking targets deep inside Russian territory, including Moscow itself. This significant plan is expected to be rolled out during a meeting between Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday.

Furthermore, new sanctions on Russia appear to be on the horizon. When pressed on the matter, Trump cryptically replied, "We're going to see what we will see tomorrow, OK?" This follows the introduction of a bipartisan sanctions bill by US senators earlier on Sunday. This proposed legislation aims to grant President Trump sweeping powers to pressure Moscow, including the ability to impose tariffs of up to 500 per cent on any country found to be aiding Russia's war effort. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham described it as "a sledgehammer available to President Trump to end this war," specifically mentioning countries like China, India, and Brazil as potential recipients of such tariffs.

Having returned to the White House in January, Trump had initially hoped to broker peace with Moscow by holding off on tightening sanctions. However, months of stalled negotiations and continued Russian aggression seem to have finally eroded his patience, leading to this decisive new approach.
