India's Global Anti-Terror Push: A United Front Against Cross-Border Threats
India is making a powerful statement on the global stage, dispatching multi-party delegations to capitals worldwide to champion its unwavering stance against terrorism. This concerted diplomatic offensive aims to expose the persistent threat of cross-border terrorism, particularly from Pakistan, and to galvanize international support for India's zero-tolerance policy.
Pathankot Revisited: A Missed Opportunity for Pakistan
In a recent address to the Indian community in New York, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, a prominent voice in one such delegation, recalled the 2016 Pathankot air base attack. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise visit to Pakistan in December 2015 as a critical moment – a final opportunity for Islamabad to demonstrate genuine commitment to fighting terrorism.
Tharoor sharply criticized the handling of the Pathankot probe, where Pakistani investigators were allowed access to Indian airbases, only to return home and shift blame onto India. "Imagine the horror of the Indian military establishment with this idea that Pakistani investigators would come to Indian airways," Tharoor remarked, adding, "They came and they went back to Pakistan and said, all the Indians did it to themselves... 2015 was the last opportunity for them to behave, to cooperate, to really show they were serious about ending terror."
The Pathankot attack, occurring just days after Modi's goodwill visit, underscored the deep-seated challenges in India-Pakistan relations concerning terrorism. While India extended an olive branch by allowing a Pakistani Joint Investigation Team (JIT) access to the airbase, Pakistan failed to reciprocate with an NIA visit or share crucial evidence, further eroding trust.
A Unified Message to the World
These multi-party delegations, encompassing a broad spectrum of India's political landscape, are a testament to the nation's unified resolve against terrorism. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar affirmed this solidarity on X, stating, "India stands together in declaring zero tolerance for terrorism."
From Bahrain to South Korea, Slovenia to Qatar, these teams are actively engaging with foreign officials, media, and think tanks to underscore India's experiences with cross-border terrorism. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, part of the Bahrain delegation, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "The terrorists have justified killings of innocent people in India... In our opinion, there is no difference between terrorists in Pakistan and ISIS takfiri ideology."
The recent diplomatic push comes amidst heightened tensions following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which tragically claimed 26 civilian lives. India's swift military response, Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, was a clear demonstration of its determination to counter such threats. While Pakistan retaliated with attempted strikes, the conflict was de-escalated through talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs), leading to a ceasefire agreement.
The Indian Diaspora: A "Force Multiplier"
A recurring theme across all delegations is the recognition of the Indian diaspora as a "force multiplier." Members are being urged to leverage their influence in public and political discourse within their respective countries to amplify India's anti-terrorism stance. Their active participation is seen as crucial in shaping global opinion and fostering greater understanding of India's challenges.
