Nato Chief Warns India, China, Brazil of Harsh Sanctions Over Russia Ties

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned India, China, and Brazil of severe economic sanctions if they continue trading with Russia. Rutte and US President Trump are pushing for urgent peace talks, signalling heavy tariffs and secondary sanctions if no deal is reached within 50 days.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has issued a strong warning to India, China, and Brazil, stating they could face tough economic sanctions if they continue doing business with Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Speaking after a meeting with US senators on Wednesday, Rutte urged the leaders of these major economies to push Russian President Vladimir Putin to take peace talks seriously. He stressed that failing to act could result in 100% secondary sanctions, especially targeting countries buying Russian oil and gas.

"If you are in Beijing, Delhi, or Brasília, and you continue to trade with Russia, know this - if Putin doesn’t come to the peace table, we will respond with full secondary sanctions," Rutte said.

He also encouraged the leaders of these nations to speak directly with Putin.

"Make that call to Putin. Convince him to move toward peace. Because if not, the impact will fall hard on your countries - economically and politically," Rutte added.

This stern warning comes just a day after US President Donald Trump announced fresh military support for Ukraine and outlined a tough 50-day deadline for peace progress. If no deal is reached by then, Trump says he will impose sweeping tariffs and secondary sanctions on nations that continue to support or trade with Russia.

If we don’t have a deal within 50 days, there will be tariffs - 100% or more - and more sanctions,” Trump declared.

The US administration, backed by a significant majority in the Senate (85 out of 100), is also preparing legislation that could allow Trump to impose tariffs as high as 500% on nations seen as aiding Russia.

India, China, and Turkey are currently some of the biggest importers of Russian oil. If the US sanctions are enforced, these countries - particularly India - could face sharp economic consequences, energy shortages, and rising global oil prices.

In response to the threats, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated that Russia is open to talks with Trump but rejected any form of ultimatums, calling them counterproductive.
