Air India Passengers and Crew Fall Ill on London-Mumbai Flight

Trouble in the Sky: What Happened on Air India Flight AI 130?
According to Hindustan Times-Imagine settling in for a long flight, only to start feeling unwell mid-journey. That's exactly what happened to several individuals on board Air India flight AI 130, traveling from London to Mumbai on Monday. Five passengers and two crew members reported symptoms like nausea and dizziness, raising concerns and prompting an investigation.
While initially, suspicions of food poisoning circulated, a crucial detail has emerged: a potential cause could be slow decompression, or a gradual drop in cabin pressure. This means the air inside the aircraft might have slowly lost some of its normal density, leading to a reduced oxygen supply.
The Onboard Experience
Passengers began feeling ill at various stages of the flight. Upon landing in Mumbai, medical teams were on standby. Two passengers and two crew members, who continued to feel unwell, were immediately taken to the medical room at Terminal 2 for further examination. Thankfully, all affected individuals were later discharged after receiving medical assistance.
Interestingly, the pilots of the flight were not affected by the sickness. An airline official, speaking anonymously, clarified that pilots receive their meals after passengers have been served, which might suggest the issue wasn't related to in-flight catering, if food was indeed the cause. However, the slow decompression theory points away from food as the primary culprit.
What's Next?
Air India has confirmed the incident and stated they are thoroughly investigating the matter. They have also duly notified the aviation regulator. This incident highlights the critical importance of cabin pressure and air quality for passenger and crew well-being during flights. As the investigation continues, it will be vital to understand the exact cause to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
