US to Exit UNESCO Again Under President Trump’s Renewed 'America First' Policy

The US will once again withdraw from UNESCO, citing concerns over bias, pro-China influence, and politicised cultural policies. The move reflects Trump’s wider retreat from global organisations since returning to office in 2025.

United States Leaves UNESCO Again Amid Renewed Global Policy Shift

The United States has announced it will withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), marking another major shift in its foreign policy under President Donald Trump’s second term.

White House officials confirmed the decision, explaining it stems from concerns over UNESCO’spoliticised agenda” and perceived bias towards China and Palestine. Trump’s administration accused the Paris-based agency of promoting divisive cultural narratives and undermining American values.

UNESCO has promoted global standards that favour Beijing and has supported actions that we believe are anti-Israel and anti-Jewish,” a senior White House official told The New York Post.

The administration also took issue with what it called “wokediversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives pushed by the agency, claiming they are out of line with the views of most American voters.

This isn’t the first time the US has exited UNESCO. The country withdrew in 1984 during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, citing mismanagement and anti-American bias, before rejoining in 2003 under George W. Bush. Trump previously pulled out in 2017, and President Biden reversed that decision in 2021.

Now, with Trump back in office in 2025, the US is once again scaling back its role in global institutions. The administration has also confirmed plans to leave the World Health Organization (WHO) and cut financial support to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).

White House deputy spokesperson Anna Kelly defended the move, stating:

This President will always put America First and ensure our country’s membership in all international organisations aligns with our national interests.”

UNESCO is best known for designating World Heritage Sites, but recent decisions by the agency to label Jewish heritage sites as “Palestinian World Heritage” have stirred backlash from Washington.

As global tensions continue to shift, the US departure from UNESCO signals a clear return to a more unilateral foreign policy - one that prioritises domestic interests over multilateral cooperation.
